Lenoir-Rhyne Head Coach: Appalachian State Could Own the Big 10 & The ACC.

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on September 7, 2007

The head football of Lenoir-Rhyne, Fred Goldsmith, pulls no punches when it comes to interviews. In a feeble attempt to put the spotlight on him and his Lenoir-Rhyne football team, Goldsmith basically says that majority of the Big Eleven Ten & ACC teams suck.

“When Fred Goldsmith was Duke’s head coach in the 1990s, he repeatedly rebuffed requests from Jerry Moore, his close friend and head coach at Division I-AA Appalachian State, to schedule a game between the schools.

“We were a bowl team back then, and I still didn’t want any part of them,” Goldsmith says. “They were too good.”

“They have great speed. Edwards did the same things to Michigan that Troy Smith (of Ohio State) did last year, and (Smith) won the Heisman Trophy,” Goldsmith says. “Appalachian State is better than five or six teams in the Big Ten, and they’re better than five or six in the ACC, too.”

Ooohhh ouch…while everyone in America is still on the Appy State bandwagon, I’m going to disagree there. This Appy State team is talented, that I can admit. This is also the same Appy State team that lost to NC State last year. Everyone knows just how good that team was, losing to Akron and all. What on happened Saturday was a fluke, and a poor job of coaching and preparation by Lloyd sitting lame duck Carr. I’m not trying to take away the victory Appy State secured last Saturday, but I am trying to put in some perspective.

“If Michigan and Appalachian State both go undefeated the rest of the season, the Mountaineers could conceivably be No. 1 in Jeff Sagarin’s final computer rankings, Sagarin said. Sagarin has ASU 38th in the country this week, two spots ahead of Michigan.”

OK, that’s just stupid. Look at some other teams that have a tougher schedule. What if Ohio State defeats Meechigan by a larger number than Appy State, are you going to tell me that Appy State is a better team? That’s ridiculous. I’m all for giving credit to smaller schools and the great victories their teams can pull off, but I highly doubt that Appy State will be the best football team that can beat any division 1-A team in the country. But I will concede that they are better than some teams in bigger conferences particularly the Big East, Sunbelt and ACC, but at the same time remember their game with NC State last year.

So I profess on this day 9/7/07.

If Appy State lost to NC State last year, then would that loss to NC State be comsidered an upset???

What’s this coach saying when he was at Duke he didn’t wanna schedule them to play??? Losing in football is EXPECTED!!! YOU’RE FREAKIN DUKE!!!

  2. I love the line “we were a bowl team back then” most coaches that can take Duke to a bowl, don’t wind up at 2-A schools.

Yeah, if they were a bowl team back then, that coach would be coaching a major D 1 program at least a few times. The next coach that can take Duke to a bowl will get hired by a psycho booster immediately…

Speaking of which, I wonder when the ESPN rumor mill will start on Lloyd Carr’s replacement…
