West Virginia: One Big Clusterf**k

You know, I told myself I would not post anymore about Mountaineer football for a while, but then I come across this from Yahoo! Sports, this story from the Times West Virginia (Morgantown’s newspaper), and this post from the hardworking guys at Losers with Socks. Manna from heaven I tell you…
Let’s start with the first story. WV governor and former Mountaineer football player Gov. Joe Manchin is still chirping about the $4 million buyout clause in Rodriguez’s contract when he left for bigger and better at Michigan. Gov. Manchin does not believe that the school did not break promises by failing to build shiny new buildings and show financial commitment to the school. He sites an increase in Rodriguez’s pay (that was part of his contract), salary increases in assistant’s pay (Michigan pays better), and a new $2 million academic center for athletes (we see how well that worked out for Tennessee). Then he dropped this nugget: “I don’t know the intricacies of it. I’m speaking as a fan”.
Hey Gov, this is the part where I say, “You’re the governor of the great state of West Virginia. Last I checked, West Virginia University was a state school, located inside your state. I would think that you of all people would know the details of what is going on at the state’s school, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the cash cow that is Mountaineer football. But then again, what do I know??? I don’t know the intricacies of it. I’m speaking as a college football fan.”
Next article, a battle of boosters at West Virginia. Ken Kendrick, a managing partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks and founder of a mess of tech companies and banks (in other words, he is PAID!!!) and Mike Puskar, co-founder of Mylan Pharmaceuticals, the country’s #1 generic drug manufacturer (in other words, he is PAID too!!!), have a difference of opinion over Rodriguez leaving and how the school’s athletic department is run in general.
Ken Kendrick, seen here, backs Rodriguez and says that the school did the coach wrong. He states that promises were made and not kept, and that also another booster, Stu Robbins, head of a successful equity firm, conducted a survey of the entire athletic department that proves how bass ackwards things really are.
This guy, Mike Puskar, disagrees. He is of the opinion that the athletic department is fine, and that boosters should stay the hell away. Give money and shut up is what he feels is the role of the booster. He also feels that the school has not broken any promises to Rodriguez. Thomas talked about the broken promises earlier.
While I agree that boosters should not have total power, if you have a guy willing to give a few million dollars to a school, he should have some right to how that money is spent. Boosters make big time college athletics go. Ask SEC, Big 12, or Pac-10 school. Remember Logan Young, he’s with the Bear…
Losers with Socks’ Fearless Taco Bell gave us a little nugget about the Mountaineer fanbase. The Arizona Republic reports that West Virginia has given back thousands of tickets to the Fiesta Bowl. I am not shocked at all. This means that Oklahoma fans will be live and in effect. They were going to be anyway, because OU is big time college football, and their fans will travel anywhere. It’s just too bad there is no college football system, because they would have a shot of winning it all.
This is West Virginia. This is West Virginia Football. And as long as there is the internet and TV, there will always be something for us to blog about. Merry Christmas…

And to top off all this, Manchin’s daughter who is COO of Puskar’s company got an MBA from WVU, without doing any of the work.
The athletic dept is not the only thing that’s bass ackwards there.

Wow .. Great. I’m sure the OU fans are thrilled about he outcome of the Fiesta Bowl. They got to see their precious team beat by a bunch of good ol’, never get any credit hillbillies. Sometimes the game has alot to do with heart. Not that anyone in Michigan understands that. BTW – you should be so proud of your dull, dreary, deadly city of Detroit for being named Murder Capitol of the Nation. Nice. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to enlighten me on why all the baby boomers and retiree’s are leaving the great state of Michigan. I have sold more the 50 properties myself to Michiganders in the past 2 years – you’ll never believe where they are buying property – ——- Why, it’s good ol’ West By God Virginia! Ha!

Man if the Mountaineers are that screwed up the only excuse for them winning the Fiesta Bowl is that they must just be better than OU.
