The NFL Draft is Coming

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on April 22, 2008

With the NFL draft coming up this weekend, everyone is saying Matt Ryan will be the first QB to be taken. Personally I feel analyzing the draft is pointless, after all people actually debated on who was better between Manning and Ryan Leaf. We all know how that turned out. Here’s a closer look at Matt Ryan for entertainment.

Maybe Frank Thomas Should have Kept his Mouth Shut

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on April 22, 2008

Thomas has 516 career homers, placing him 18th on baseball’s career list. He also has 264 career home runs as a designated hitter, the most in baseball history.

With a career average of .302, Thomas is one of four players in baseball history with at least a .300 average, 500 home runs, 1,500 RBIs, 1,000 runs and 1,500 walks. The others are Mel Ott, Babe Ruth.

And right now he’s unemployed. On Saturday, Thomas publicly ripped management for demoting him, then didn’t bother to appear either in the dugout or on the field during the Blue Jays’ 3-2 victory over the Tigers.

So it can’t be considered a total shock that the Blue Jays released him on Sunday, even though they had to swallow $7 million of his $8 million 2008 salary.

Thomas suggested that his 2009 option that would have vested at $10 million more with 304 more plate appearances was the reason for his benching.

“We all know what’s behind this. What else could be behind this but the money?”

Thomas, who was 10 for 60 (.167) with three home runs, made his feelings about his demotion known by telling the Toronto Sun,

“They do that after 16 games, after 16 at-bats. That’s bullshit.”

Thomas began terribly last year, as well, and was in fact hitting just .223 on June 1 last year before he turned it around and finished with a typical season (26 homers, 95 RBIs, .277) so there’s some logic to his outburst.

“If you know Frank, he’s an emotional guy,” Ricciardi said Sunday. “He wears his heart on his sleeve. I would be disappointed if a player didn’t have a reaction that he cared. That wasn’t really that important to me.”

Ricciardi said Thomas was more calm when they met Sunday, adding that the contract was not part of their discussion.

“That never came up,” Ricciardi said. “I told Frank our decision is based on performance and his decision is based on not being able to be in the lineup.”

What a joke. A month into the season and you waive the guy who LED YOUR TEAM IN HR last year. They should have never brought him to camp and allowed him to catch on with someone else. Way to treat a HOF ballplayer. I hope free agents pay attention to how they treated one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game.

This just in, the Blue Jays bench and release Thomas to bring back Joe Carter. The Blue Jays say that Joe Carter gives them a better chance to win and they are all about contending.

I guess the door is open to go out and sign the unemployed Barroid Bonds now. If the Blue Jays want to be serious contenders that is the only logical move.
