A Sports Blog on why ALL Teams Suck…Again!

Tennessee & Phil Fulmer are clearly in a perfect storm. Will change be the end result?

Posted by Thomas the Terrible on October 17, 2008

What’s that? Fulmer won’t be fired? Surely you think I’m joking right? Unfortunately I’m not joking.

We all know Fulmer got the dreaded “vote of confidence” from Hamilton this week. For a better perspective you need to read what the Ghost of Neyland of the 3rd Saturday in Blogtober wrote. It’s an excellent piece.

Despite the comments from Hamilton, Fulmer stated that he (Hamilton) has been supportive during this storm of criticism.

“Mike has been very supportive,” Fulmer said Wednesday. “We meet every so often, scheduled, to talk about different things and stuff.

“Obviously we’ve got problems that we’re working through,” Fulmer said, speaking of his team, “but he’s (Hamilton has) shown great confidence and … looking forward to the future.”

Coach Fulmer also stated that he is equally concerned about the status of Rocky Top.

“There’s concern. I’m not going to sit here and say there’s not,” he said. “There’s concern by everybody who loves Tennessee football or Tennessee athletics about where we are and having an opportunity here to still turn the season around and so on. I just couldn’t have been more pleased, and also with some of the friends that I have that are at the trustee level. Those folks have been really good. Contrary to what you might read sometimes.”

OK one day Mike Hamilton is reportedly saying he is not afraid to make a change in coaching and very next day Fulmer is stating he is happy with the support he is getting. (Notice he did not say exactly who was supporting him)

My question is Fulmer is trying to keep from losing control of this team? I truly hope he is able to do that.

Now I’m a distrusting person by nature so something is telling me that though Hamilton’s comments are nice to hear however I don’t exactly believe him. I will believe it when I see it. Talk is cheap.

Fulmer has a six million dollar contract buy-out & the SEC is tougher top to bottom than it has been in years. Those two reasons alone could save his job for at least one more season.

There is also something that I have noticed. Fulmer is resilient like a cockroach. No matter how must Raid and Black Flag you spray, or how many times you wear your pointy shoes, he manages to survive.

Now I know someone will point out that Hamilton said the amount of Fulmer’s buy out is in reserves so money isn’t an issue. Let me remind you of this fact. Mike Hamilton is the sole reason the students are being charged for tickets. That man is more about the “bottom line” then people realize.

This should say it all about Hamilton
This should say it all about Hamilton

Another factor is the recruiting class that he is currently building. Let’s fact it those recruits are watching the games and believing they will start next season. With this team’s performance this season, can you blame them?

Though Fulmer will remain the coach changes will take place. Basically a firing sweep of ALMOST the assistant coaches and/or coordinators.

Here’s a rundown

John Chavis Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers Coach & Associate Head Coach:

  • Chavis is safe so no worries there. The “Mustang” defense shall live on for another season. He was named defensive coordinator at UT in 1995, Chavis has gained recognition as a defensive guru the old-fashioned way — by building hard-nosed teams that have helped Tennessee rank among the stingiest in college football. Whether you like Chavis or not, you have to admit that more often than not the Tennessee defense has been great year in & year out.. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Dave Clawson Offensive Coordinator & Quarterback Coach:

  • He is the candidate to get this year’s Randy Sanders scapegoat award. He sucks & I don’t want to hear about not having the athletes to run the spread option either. One rule in coaching is when you don’t have the players to run a certain game plan you change the game plan. That is something I do not see him doing. I do not see the plays that cater to the offense’s strengths being called.

Latrell Scott Wide Receivers Coach:

  • Bye-Bye Latrell. The receivers have a load of talent but aren’t getting the proper and much needed separation that is required to help out the quarterback. Granted like Clawson this is his first year but life sometimes just isn’t fair.

Greg Adkins Offensive Line Coach:

  • The O-Line could be the major factor of our problems this season. The schemes don’t work and with Adkins being there for four years that means the starters have been coached under him the whole time.

Dan Brooks Defensive Line Coach:

  • Brooks is safe. He has been there 13 years and is a big reason that Chavis looks good. (But obviously not the only reason) If Brooks were to leave it would either be because a new coach as hired or he has taken a job as the defensive coordinator somewhere else.

Steve Caldwell Defensive Ends Coach:

  • Like Brooks he is safe and has been there for 13 years as well. If he were to leave to would be for the same reasons I have stated for Brooks.

Jason Michael Tight Ends/Offensive Line Coach:

  • I hope Jason doesn’t have a problem carrying Adkins’ bags for him.

Stan Drayton Running Backs Coach:

  • He was the Florida Running Backs before coming here….but I say big flipping deal. Outside of the offensive line, the running backs have been the most unmotivated part of the offense this season. If you don’t believe me just look at the production numbers.

Larry Slade Defensive Backs Coach:

  • Again another keeper. It’s rather hard to argue with the firing of any coach on defense when they are truly the reason the VOLS are worth watching on TV.

If a coaching change is to be occurring it needs to be done with class or it will take a long time to rebuild. Tennessee needs a smooth transition so that they do not lose what has been built to this point.

I don’t want to see anything like what is happening at Clemson, with the players’ bad mouthing coach Bowden & top rated recruits de-committing.

If we, as the VOL Nation, can remain a class act, everyone, including new recruits and coaches will take notice.

Also we all need to remember Coach Fulmer’s hard work and dedication to the University is the reason expectations are so high.
